How do erectile dysfunction pills work?

PDE5 enzyme inhibition
The drugs block the enzyme phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5). This enzyme is responsible for breaking down cGMP, a substance that relaxes the blood vessels in the penis.
Improved blood flow
When PDE5 is inhibited, cGMP stays active longer. This causes the blood vessels in the penis to relax, which increases blood flow during sexual stimulation.
Sexual arousal as a trigger
The drugs do not automatically cause an erection, but begin to work with sexual arousal. The excitement triggers the process, where the brain sends signals that trigger the release of nitric oxide (NO), triggering the cGMP process.
Temporary operation
Erection pills work temporarily. The duration of action varies by medication. Sildenafil, for example, works for about 4-6 hours, while tadalafil can be effective for up to 36 hours.
What are the side effects of erectile dysfunction medications?
